The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory

The mission of the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is the study and conservation of birds and their habitat in and around the Gulf of Mexico.

• The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory (GCBO) is located in Lake Jackson at the Hwy 332 bridge over Buffalo Camp Bayou (see map below).

• The Observatory has a wonderful nature store and beautiful hiking trails through the Columbia Bottomlands forest. Visitors and members are welcome to visit during the hours of 8:30 - 4:30, Mon.-Fri.

GCBO’S INTERNATIONAL APPROACH TO BIRD CONSERVATION

Through working in partnerships and the sharing of expertise, the GCBO is addressing an important conservation issue that had largely been overlooked—the requirements of birds during migration and the critical threat to their habitat around the Gulf of Mexico.

LAND PROTECTION

GULF CROSSINGS – A Technical Assistance Program providing coordination and support to private landowners, sanctuaries, preserves and other conservation partners, in the management, protection and restoration of Gulf coastal stopover sites and other habitats important to birds. The site partners are located in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama in the U.S., the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo in Mexico, and on the western tip of Cuba.

TRAINING & EDUCATION

RAIN CROW CALLING – A comprehensive Educational Outreach program communicating the importance of birds and habitat conservation to children and adults in the Gulf region

RESEARCH PROGRAMS

MIGRATION MONITORING – A long-term Avian Research project with volunteers throughout the Gulf region and beyond gathering information on migratory birds.

SMITH POINT HAWK WATCH – An Avian Research project monitoring raptor populations as they pass through southeast Texas on fall migration.

PROJECT PRAIRIE BIRDS – An Avian Research project monitoring wintering grassland birds in tall-grass, coastal prairies—one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America.

COLUMBIA BOTTOMLANDS FOREST BIRD STUDY GROUP – An Avian Research project conducting banding and point count studies to contribute to the scientific knowledge of how migratory and resident birds utilize the dwindling hardwood habitat on the Upper Texas Coast.

THE GULF COAST BIRD OBSERVATORY IS ABOUT PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF

BIRDS, OTHER WILDLIFE & PEOPLE

through

EDUCATION, LAND PROTECTION, & AVIAN RESEARCH.
The GCBO has become recognized as an innovative organization, designing and conducting a significant number of large conservation projects.

If you would like to find out more about how to participate in one of the Citizen Science bird research projects, contact the GCBO or visit their website www.GCBO.org.
