Where Texas Began

"The Old Three Hundred"... They gave rise to a new and unique culture that is recognized throughout the world as Texas! There is simply none other like it. In all its present day diversity it continues to reflect the attitudes, independent lifestyles and values implanted by those early settlers who, beginning in 1821, braved a new and oftentimes hostile environment to settle Austin's Colony.

Their story is now fully portrayed in exhibit form at the Brazoria County Historical Museum. More than 100 historical markers are located throughout Brazoria County.

The Brazoria County Historical Museum is located in Angleton, Texas in the heart of Stephen F. Austin's Colony. This is where Texas began its emergence as an independent nation. We are a regional museum. Our national award-winning Austin Colony exhibit chronicles the birth of that nation. It also speaks to the frontier experience that has so marked the American character. We would like to share some of what we know about this region's role in America's movement West.

Sea Center Texas

Located in Lake Jackson, the eleven million dollar saltwater fish hatchery showcases a 22,000 square foot hatchery building housing red drum and spotted sea trout. They produce more than twenty million fingerlings per year. In addition, the hatchery includes "touch tanks" for children and three aquariums. The two thousand gallon tidal grass aquarium features fish found in Texas bays, rivers and lakes. The five thousand gallon surf tank aquarium features fish caught off Texas beaches and jetties. Finally, the 52,000 gallon offshore aquarium features species found in the Gulf. All aquariums present the species as they would live in their natural habitat.

The centerpiece of the exhibits is a 50,000 gallon aquarium that is the home of "Gordon," a 250 pound grouper that flaps his fins slowly and stares at amazed onlookers. Red drum, tarpon and other open water fish stay out of the way of the five twelve-foot sharks slowly circling over the sand bottom.

A twelve-foot touch pool allows visitors to handle marine animals such as blue crabs, hermit crabs, starfish, urchins, snails and anemones.

Other exhibits include salt marsh exhibits, coastal bay aquarium, jetty tank, artificial reef tank, culture ponds and salt march walkways.
